Established in February, 1951, Shanghai Federation of Industry and Commerce (abbreviated as SFIC) is also known as Shanghai Chamber of Commerce.

It is a people’s organization of business communities, a local organization in the network of All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce and a non-profit chamber’s service organization. From 1991, SFIC mainly supply service for private enterprises, not only acting a bridge between government and private companies but also assisting government in management of non-state economy.

With the fast development of private economy, the members of SFIC is up to 28,276 by the end of July, 2007. The members consist of company members, group members and individual members.

The main function of SFIC is as the following:

political consultation on important issues on Shanghai’s political, economic and social activities; democratic supervision , participating in and deliberating of state affairs;acting as a bridge between government and private enterprises; expressing comments, requirements and suggestions on behalf of members; representing and protecting the legal rights of members ;supplying members services of policies, information, technology, management, law, finance, professional training, etc;

establishing wide and close cooperation relationship with overseas organizations of industry and commerce; helping members to explore domestic and international market, etc.
